Nobody Nobody
Soulmates
(Ubiquity)

On Soulmates, DJ Nobody’s acoustic psychedelic sensibilities blend effortlessly with his urban-flavored beats and freestyle rhymes. Nobody’s music reflects inspirations that range from avant-garde jazz, experimental space rock, mariachi music and everything in between.

1. "I Am Nobody" - DJ Nobody’s moniker reflects his desire to defy categorization.
2. "Shades of Hip Hop" - Despite the avant-garde sound, Nobody considers himself a hip hop artist.
3. "The Muse" - How the musical muses came through in the nick of time.
4. "Fiend or the Fix" - Nobody’s beat-heavy production of this simmering track raised a few hackles.

DJ Assault DJ Assault
Off the Chain for the Y2K
(Intuit-Solar)

DJ Assault, aka Craig Adams, is the Ayatollah of "Ghetto Tech", the Motor City club sound that marries the turntablist's art with lyrics at the frontier of raunch. With its whacky chipmunk voices chanting x-rated lyrics at break-neck tempos, the most sensible reaction to this album may just be to dance.

1. "Ghetto Tech" - DJ Assault may have pioneered "Ghetto Tech", but he's not crazy about the name.
2. "F**k You Hoe" - A meditation on "female-troubles" drawn from real life.
3. "Ass and Titties" - The Assault treatment of a classic theme.
4. "Collector's Item" - This continuous mix CD was edited for national release, because many of the tracks borrowed copyrighted material; but a few sneaked through.

Red Snapper Red Snapper
Our Aim Is to Satisfy Red Snapper
(Matador)

London's Red Snapper is no stranger to modern studio tricks, but what sets this CD apart from the dance/electronic herd is the solid playing of Richard Thair on drums, David Ayers on guitar, and Ali Friend on acoustic double bass. With vocalists MC Det and Karime Kendra, the groove is always organic, and just when things start to get sweaty, there are moments of sudden beauty.

1. "Something New" - Bassist Ali Friend hears the sounds of London in Red Snapper's sonic landscapes.
2. "Jokes and Kinks" - Dance music can have its own techno-poetry, but sometimes it's best just to laugh.
3. "Double Bass" - Red Snapper's music is often called electronic, but Ali Friend is wedded to to his acoustic bass.
4. "Beauty, and Truth" - Friend says there are unguarded moments in Red Snapper's music that still make him blush.
5. "Karime" - Vocalist Karime Kendra may just have broken the heat barrier.

Broadcast Broadcast
Extended Play Two
(Tommy Boy)

This Birmingham, U.K., foursome combine pop sensibilities with experimental oddities to produce dreamy, thoughtful music. Their new, five-song EP was recorded in their small home studio (in the bedroom), but is by no means lo-fi.

1. "Pop Experiments" - Bassist/recordist James Cargill says Broadcast holds true to pop song structures, while injecting elements of the avant-garde.
2. "Illuminating Lyrics" - Cargill describes Trish Keenan’s lyrical poetry in songs like “Illumination”.
3. "Man from Atlantis" - A man, a band, some music, and a Macintosh. Chopping bits of sound into the song in the instrumental “A Man from Atlantis”
