There's More To Music Rock

asmsilkworm.JPG Silkworm
Lifestyle
(Touch and Go)

Silkworm is a modern rock trio whose eighth album shows a band whose writing and playing is upbeat, reflective and fun - what's supposed to happen with bands as they grow. It's obvious the band loves what they're doing, even if their songs are more alert and polished than most rock heard in mainstream venues.

1. "Lifestyle" - Singer-songwriter Andy Cohen says the band's eighth CD is generous in spirit and possibly their best yet.
2. "Contempt" - Lifestyle starts with a song that was prompted by a piano and (finally) a good French film.
3. "Ooh La La" - Fans take note. This song by 'The Faces' is the first cover ever put on a Silkworm CD.
4. "Tim's Secret Weapon" - The band's big, fat, bottom end is not a regular bass guitar.

Chris Dicroce Chris DiCroce
American Dream
(Flyboy)

In Chris DiCroce's mind, his second album was supposed to be an upbeat rocker, but his emotions dictated otherwise. The album is an intimate reflection of DiCroce's musings on his life and the state of his own American dream. All nine songs are originals with a couple of very well hidden bonus tracks.

1. "The Wayward Bus" - Singer-songwriter DiCroce's search for meaning is aided by bus travel and a serendipitous selection of reading material.
2. "The American Dream" - What is it anyway? The answer is heartfelt and surprisingly simple.
3. "Stonecutter's Heart" - What is this thing called love?
4. "Bruce Springsteen" - Emotional honesty and the songwriter's craft are the hallmark of a great artist.

Jim Weider Jim Weider and the Honky Tonk Gurus
Big Foot

Telecaster master Jim Weider has left The Band and launched his own group. Their initial offering pays homage to the founders of the Telecaster empire--Roy Buchanan, Steve Cropper, James Burton--as well as Hendrix, Chuck Berry, and that cryptic giant that may lurk in the wilderness.

1. "The CD: Jim Weider Steps Out" - After years with The Band, why is guitarist Jim Weider now launching his own band?
2. "Big Foot--yeah, THAT Big Foot" - He’s eight feet tall, he lives in the woods, and man, is he ever funky.
3. "Long Time Coming" - Just keep doing it ‘til you get it right, and then get Lamont Depew, your local electrician, to sing lead.
4. "Tele-man" - Once you’ve heard the true tone of the real Telecaster, you’ll go to any lengths to bring it home.

Phil Lesh and Friends Phil Lesh and Friends
Highlights Volume One
(Grateful Dead Records)

Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen was there at the start of the San Francisco sound in the 1960s, playing acoustic and electric with The Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna and others. In 1999, he joined former Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh for a memorable string of gigs that resulted in this CD. Phil and friends ended up backing Jorma on several of his songs, while Jorma brought a freshness to some near-forgotten Grateful Dead compositions.

1. "The CD" - Jorma Kaukonen has played guitar for some of San Francisco's most famous bands, including this notable ensemble created by Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh.
2. "Deprees Diamond Blues" - Jorma heard this ragtime-inspired Garcia-Hunter ballad years ago, but never realized how cool it was until he tried playing it.
3. "Jorma's Songbook" - Phil and Friends back Jorma on two well-known songs from his 'fingerstyle' guitar reportoire.
4. "Jamming" - Jam Bands have come a long way since the 1960s, and Kaukonen's fellow guitarist Steve Kimmock is one of the genre's best players.

The Persuasions Persuasions
Might As Well...The Persuasions Sing Grateful Dead
(Arista)

They’ve done Dylan, Zappa, Kurt Weill and Sam Cooke. Now the Persuasions add the Grateful Dead to their seemingly unlimited repertoire, proving once again that great songs and great singers transcend categories and labels.

1. "Dreams and Inspirations" - What lead the Persuasions to the Dead? According to the group’s lead singer, Jerry Lawson, it was a dream conjured up by special request….
2. "Title" - Lawson recalls the conversation with producer David Gans that gave the album its name, then pays tribute to the vocal talents of Jerry Garcia.
3. "Fans" - Once you’ve played for a Dead crowd, you know what it means to have fans.
4. "Roses and Rivers" - What gives a song special meaning? Sometimes it’s the sound, sometimes it’s the setting….

Tom Burris Tom Burris
Jabbering Trout
(Safari Records)

Eclectic songwriter/guitarist Tom Burris steps out in the Big Apple with a new (since his last CD) group, a batch of new songs, and a new producer (John Alagia of Dave Matthews fame).

1. "Sailors and Gerbils" - Burris doesn’t routinely look to his own experiences for metaphorical fodder, but on this album his love of sailing and his year among lab rats served him well.
2. "The Craft" - Writing songs mostly takes time, attention, a lot of screwing around on the guitar, and it helps to play with great musicians, too.
3. "Unrequited Love and Hard Times on the Farm" - It’s been said that good songs come out of hard times. Burris offers two examples.

Bozzio Levins Stevens Bozzio Levin Stevens

2. "Drum Kit Evolution" - Accompanied by the flamenco-inspired "Tziganne," drummer Terry Bozzio describes the development of his drum kit and his technique.

4. "Steve and Tony" - Terry Bozzio on the artistry of his colleagues, guitarist Steve Stevens and bassist Tony Levin, and the chemistry among them.

Steve Morse Steve Morse
Major Impacts

Guitar ace Steve Morse issues an album of eleven original songs, each emulating the sound and style of a guitarist who had a major impact on his playing. Morse steps into the stylistic shoes of such legends as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, John McLaughlin, Leslie West, Jimmy Page and Keith Richards, among others.

1. "The CD" - Sources of inspiration for guitarist Steve Morse are sometimes surprising; other times they’re as loud and clear as a Jimmy Page solo.
2. "Beatles and Byrds" - Morse discovered that evoking rock legends can require unheard-of and seemingly impossible sounds.
3. "Mountain Man" - The joys of becoming Leslie West…
4. "Morse's McLaughlin" - The Mahavishnu Orchestra was to the Dixie Dregs as John McLaughlin was to Steve Morse.

2. "Preaching Blues" - Hart grew up in a family of preachers, and he has some stories to tell.

Noel Redding Noel Redding
West Cork Tuning
(Yeahh)

Noel Redding is best known for playing bass with Jimi Hendrix, but he's also a longtime rock-n-roll guitar player who always liked a good jam. A few years ago, Keith Dion urged Redding to fly to the U.S. and sit in with his California band, 305 AM. Redding agreed, and this CD contains excerpts from those shows, all played with the off-the-cuff energy that Redding says first drew him to rock-n-roll.

1. "The CD" - Guitarist Noel Redding talks about his new recording with 3:05AM, a California band.
2. "Rock Roots" - Redding plays the American rock songs he learned growing up in England in the 50s.
3. "Rain" - Noel Redding knew John Lennon and started playing this song a decade ago.
4. "Beyond Hendrix" - Redding talks about playing the Jimmy Hendrix song book.

Zen Tricksters Zen Tricksters
A Love Surreal
(Safari Records)

The title evokes John Coltrane and his spirit of free improvisation. The Zen Trickster’s songs and jams, and their sense of community, reflect the influence of the Grateful Dead.

1. "The CD" - Love is strange, says the Zen Tricksters’ Jeff Mattson, and sometimes singing about it can be fairly weird, too.
2. "Going Down Slow" - Some songs just seem to write themselves.
3. "Jam Band" - Musically, says Mattson, the Tricksters are looking for the best of both worlds.
